A Field Trip to Farmhouse Natural Cheeses

7 years ago we were driving around Abbotsford, exploring the area and visiting potential suppliers. We made a quick stop at Lepp Farm Market near Clayburn Village and that's how we discovered Farmhouse Natural Cheeses. I'll be honest, I was first drawn to the packaging! After asking around a little we quickly learned that in addition to the lovely packaging Debra Amrein-Boyes was renowned cheesemaker. She is one of only twelve persons in western Canada and US who has been inducted into the prestigious French Cheese Guild, the “Guilde des Fromagers Confrerie de Saint-Uguzon”, which recognizes those who protect and continue the tradition of cheesemaking around the world.

Their small family run farm does not use pesticides, hormones or antibiotics in their farming practices. "In these fast- moving times of global markets and industrial food production, it is our wish to nurture and preserve the increasingly – threatened values and traditions of the family farm, and give visitors the opportunity to connect with the farmer and the animals who produce their food.  We value the relationships built along the way – with nature, with the animals, with each other and ultimately with the customer who takes some of our handcrafted cheese home with them."

Here are some photos from a field trip we recently took to visit the farm and their amazing, funny animals. Thank you Debra and George for all that you do!

SZIN - Hungarian for COLOUR

We are excited to announce our Spring release at our showroom 7e7!

Although 7e7 is a permanent space for MANDULA, Janaki Larsen and Atelier St.George, we will continue to host events inspired by our obsessions, as a way to explore our desire for different ideas and design concepts.

YELLOW has been the colour to catch our attention this season. Think sulphur, pollen, turmeric, dandelion, canary, pencil, mustard, chicks, honey, spongebob, yolk... and celebrate Spring with us!

SZIN opens Saturday, April 29 at 11 am.

See you there!

International Women's Day

Last month our big "little sister" shop  7e7 hosted a dinner with  Feisty Feast . In conversation with Julia I realized how many women, both 7e7 and Le Marché St.George carry. I had never really given it much thought, it was not  a conscious business or marketing decision to support women makers. The way we choose the products we carry has always been simple; we carry what we love. As it turns out, a lot of it is made by or run by women! Here is an overview and a thank you to all the amazing women who supply both our shops with the things that we love.

p.s click on the photos to  links to their websites. (those who have them)

Love

I don't like Valentine's Day but I love Love.

I had compiled some images of expressions of love I have seen around. Graffiti on walls, accidental heart-shaped pizzas, intitials carved on picnic tables, clever quotes inscribed on leaves, pebbles in Lola's pockets shaped like hearts. They were all lovely but this is the image that really gets to me. I have not seen this flower myself; the moment was experienced by Amy Merrick but I feel so much when I look at it. The vulnerability, the fragility, the determination, the defiant explosive flower atop a spindly stem. I love that it appears to flourish from nothing, no lushness, no nutrient rich earth, no perfect situation. It is bursting in the most inhospitable and unlikely climate. Then... then there is the person who saw all of this and thought to tape it up. One simple gesture,

That is tenderness.

That is love.

A Year in Dinners

2016 was a year of extremes. It was one of the most turbulent years I've experienced and also one of the most beautiful.

People who know me well,  know I love dinner parties, particularly setting the table and especially outside. Last year was the year of meals, shared in various places from fields, to under porticos, beaches, porches, parking lots, to shepherd huts and masserias. Special Thank You to Messors for all the Italian picnics! I look forward to a 2017 filled with many more shared breakfasts, lunches and dinners, Happy New Year everyone!
