7e7 and The Winter Shop

We are pleased to present our new concept space! Aptly named 7e7 (short for 7 East 7th Avenue), our Mount Pleasant studio has expanded to house Janaki Larsen Ceramics, Mandula, and is now also the home of The Wild Bunch Floral Studio headquarters. The official public opening of our concept space also happened to be the launch of this year's 'The Winter Shop'. What used to be an annual pop-up above Le Marché St. George has now grown into a bi-annual seasonal launch - and it's our largest one of the year!

We will be open every single day of The Winter Shop. We will be back to our regular hours after the holidays.

Janaki Larsen x Amy Merrick: Nature Studies

Nature Studies: Vancouver

Amy Merrick is thrilled to announce a new floral workshop and communal dinner hosted in collaboration with Janaki Larsen and Le Marché St George on Saturday August 27th 2016 in Vancouver, British Columbia, from 3pm-7pm.

Amy will teach both her techniques and philosophy for creating seasonal, effortless flower arrangements using wild and foraged materials found in Vancouver. She will share her experiences working alongside Japan's most celebrated ikebana masters and how those principles of natural floral design shaped how she now works with flowers. Students will gain a new understanding of composition, form, and appreciation of the flora of Vancouver and will have the privilege of arranging in Janaki Larsen’s highly sought-after ceramics, which will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the event.

Amy and Janaki will host a simple family-style meal to conclude the workshop, and attendees will help to decorate our shared table using Amy’s tips gleaned from years of creating magical environments through flowers, ceramics and food. Please join us for a day of creative inspiration, natural observation and celebration of the bounty of British Columbia’s golden days of summer.

WHERE: Vancouver, British Columbia. Exact location TBD and will be emailed to each registrant upon payment.

WHEN: August 27, 3 pm to 7 pm.

INVESTMENT: $165. Includes flowers and meal. Janaki Larsen ceramics will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the event. Payment by VISA, MC, or cash will be accepted.

ABOUT AMY MERRICK
AMY MERRICK is a floral designer, writer and stylist based in New York City. Her writings on design, flower arranging, and entrepreneurship have appeared in books, magazines and across the web. As a florist, she creates evocative tablescapes of flowers, foliage, fruits, and branches for weddings throughout the country, often gathering materials herself from the surrounding landscape. Her work as a stylist is botanically focused, and she has provided natural elements for magazine covers and national ad campaigns.

A Messors Summer

I've always thought that if I had to freeze a moment in life and relive it, over and over again, it would be a dinner party - a dinner party outside. One of my favourite alfresco dinner scenes is in Federico Fellini's Amarcord. The long rambling table, the quirky overhead sunshade, the accordion player, the copious bottles of wine, the wind, and the sentiments expressed by the drunken guests have always struck a chord with me. I think it's the unpretentiousness, the un-conrtrived, and un-self-conscious beauty of it that I love so much. 

A couple of years ago we held an olive oil tasting and dinner that had some of those qualities. It was an evening organized with our friends Tonio and Jennifer, who run a series of workshops in Puglia, Italy named Messors.  I don't think I can begin to explain the depth of knowledge, passion, and love Tonio has for his "home" and his willingness to share it with everyone. He is committed to preserving the history of food, art, and culture in this area. I've been fortunate enough to have been invited to join them for the past 4 years but it has never been "the right time". I've learned that there is no such thing as "the right time", so this is the year! We will be joining Tonio, Francesco, Julie Marr of Kitchen Culinaire  and Nicole Kilburn for 10 days of intensive learning, cooking, eating, and beauty. I can' t think of any better way of learning to cook authentic, rustic food than from the people who know it best: a shepherd, a baker, a historian, an anthropologist, a Nonna, and a friend. These workshops take the popular concepts of "knowing the maker" and "knowing where and how it's made" and push it even further into a deep and unforgettable experience. 

If you are a chef, a cook, a visual junkie, a lover of history or just curious about the culinary traditions of Southern Italy, we hope to see you there. As the photos attest, there will certainly be dinners eaten outside on long rambling tables!

Year of the Fire Monkey

Today officially marks the beginning of the Year of the Fire Monkey. For those celebrating Chinese New Year, we wish you a Happy Lunar New Year and a Happy Family Day!

Some news for those of you wondering about Atelier St. George. We will be re-opening the showroom, officially, on the 15th of February, and hosting a grand re-opening party on the evening of the 18th! For those of you who haven't signed up for the Atelier St. George newsletter yet, you can do so here, to keep up to date on showroom sales and new products that will be coming in over the next few months!

In Chinese tradition, surrounding one's table and surroundings to herald the Lunar New Year will bring one's household much prosperity and good fortune. Here's hoping!

Save Le Marché St. George!

Le Marché St George is a corner store, a café, a meeting place, and a home. It’s a husband, wife, and daughter, a sister, a best friend, an aunt, 3 chickens, 2 cats, a fish and 2 bee hives who all reside here. It's a place where everyone is welcome. It’s seeing the neighbourhood kids growing up together. It's love stories that have lead to happily-ever-afters. It’s where the mothers and fathers come to relax with their kids. It’s first dates and first babies. It's running groups and knitting groups, community vineyards, and mariachi bands. It's keeping spare keys to the neighbours houses, It’s honest people who work long hours. It’s a funky, handsome, all-crooked, old building where all of this is happening... and we want to keep it that way!

Unfortunately, due to outdated city bylaws defining what a "neighbourhood grocery store" is, we cannot be who we are and who we've been for the past 5 years. Help us change the City's mind and show them what these kinds of places mean to their neighbourhoods and communities.

The Petition

This Friday (on the 11th of December), City Officials will potentially restrict Le Marché St.George's outdoor and indoor seating and our ability to serve food. 

These restrictions would effectively close le Marché St.George because the business would not be able to generate enough revenues to stay open. The current by-laws encourage neighbourhood grocery stores to sell cigarettes, magazines, lotto tickets and junk food!

Help change these outdated by-laws by signing this petition. 
 

Dear City of Vancouver,

Please allow neighbourhood grocery stores, like Le Marché St.George, to have limited service food establishment licences, in order to succeed and serve the demands of their communities.
