Annual Recap: 2012

2012 has been an incredibly amazing journey with countless moments, people and gatherings to celebrate. I am endlessly grateful for being bestowed upon with the opportunity to capture many of them to share with you here.

Below you will find a brief list of posts that I believe reflect the true spirit of what Le Marché St George is truly about. We couldn't exist without the loving support of our community and patrons. We are ever thankful for everyone who spends a little time in our little shop on the corner of 28th street and St. George. You're all the fuel that keeps our little engine running strong. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you.

Montecristo Magazine

We have started to carry a forward-thinking, culturally relevant Vancouver publication, Montecristo. Since being founded in 2008, it has garnered an incredible response from dedicated readers within the province and abroad. In its pages you will find articles that are exceptionally written, articulate and smart. The content in each issue utilizes incredible creative talent from Vancouver and has a predominantly local agenda with the people and places they choose to feature, which is high on the list of reasons we think you should take notice. Others include (but are not limited to) its great design and awe-inspiring photographs.

Their current issue spotlights Douglas Coupland, menswear label Wings+Horns, as well as Lucas Syme and Adam Pegg of La Quercia. For our international readers who may not be able to get their hands on the magazine, some of the articles, including the aforementioned, are available to read via their website montecristomagazine.com.

Event Coverage: Mellifera Bees & The Loving Spoon Honey Tasting

This week I was lucky and excited to cover a darling event hosted by the charming Mellisa Cartwright of Mellifera Bees and Maya Chelmis of The Loving Spoon.

Both ladies were smiling as they welcomed guests eager to sample honey infused with vanilla and lemon. I must admit my only experience with Mellifera Bees' honey had been with their first batch from the hives placed in our shop's backyard, and instantly became enamored with their product. After tasting their company's infused flavoured offerings, though, it became a tough decision as to which product my heart gravitates to the most (in reflection, I believe the lemon infused honey might have an edge).

Their setup was incredibly beautiful, and spoke volumes about Mellisa and Maya's aesthetic refinement. It was a perfect marriage of two local, budding companies. A vintage piece of silverware with a stamped message from The Loving Spoon, a steaming cup of tea, miraculous honey, and carefully made biscuits would be divine on any afternoon.

Event Coverage: Panoramic Roasters Coffee Cupping

Vancouver-based Panoramic Roasting Company is creating quite a buzz, thanks to owner and roaster Stephanie French. Her love and unwavering dedication to brewing the perfect cup of joe went much further than most coffee enthusiasts (including myself) would ever dream of, by starting her own high-quality small batch roasting business. The local creative's company champions sustainable, seasonal, organic, and fairly traded beans, and we're proud to now be stocking their coffee product on our shelves.

On Saturday, Stephanie put together a small cupping event in our store to introduce her coffee to our guests. Her setup is incredibly simple and well-executed, and while we didn't get to enjoy some of their lovely homemade pies, we did get a preview of what her drip-exclusive venture in Chinatown will resemble. We're impressed, and the delightful smiles on the faces of those with samples told the same story.

Good luck Stephanie, and don't forget to bring us pie!

Event Coverage: Second Birthday Celebration

As I made my familiar walk along 28th Avenue to Marché, the buzzing of people grew more intense with each block. Nearing the building, I was immediately taken by the picturesque Columbia Valley Christmas trees stacked near each other and being admired by a few guests.

Looking a little closer, I noticed the new hand-painted Christmas lettering that adorns the shop's windows. Stepping through the door, we were fully staffed with all the familiar faces I have come to know and care for. And while the lineup to get a favourite drink and baked good was lengthy, everyone remained in good spirits. Our customers were very friendly to our staff and each other, which kept our day running smoothly.

As I headed into the back, the aroma of spiced cider warmed my nose, and quite frankly, still hasn't let it go. The pop-up shop behind the cafe (the one previewed here) looked resplendent, filled with all the goods Janaki and co. brought back from Mexico. The room was filled with the oohs and aahs of our patrons. Crowds came in and left with bags full of our rare wooly inventory. Upstairs, Pascal was exhaustedly doing his best to stuff the last duck down pillows into their pillowcase counterparts, which resulted in the Live @ Marché space being transformed into the coziest place in Vancouver. The artworks of Janaki, Patricia and Klee Larsen adorned the walls and the shelves alike, lending a half-gallery, half-shop sensibility to the event.

We can't thank our neighbourhood, customers (both old and new), staff, friends, and family enough for making our second anniversary a complete sensation. All the memories we've shared and created are meaningful because of you. As I overheard Janaki mention a few times throughout the evening, Marché is now heading into its Terrible Twos, meaning that there's a lot more liveliness in our future, and yours. See you next year!
